SHADY CXVPHER (Eminem’s verse)

This is absolutely awful, there are multiple references to physically assaulting women, which honestly, I’m not surprised to see. Don’t spread this because you think it’s good, spread this to raise awareness to the fact that Eminem is still a misogynistic pig.

The line below alone includes FOUR references to physical violence and a lesbian slur.

“But I may fight for gay rights, especially if they dyke is more of a knockout than Janay Rice/ Play nice? Bitch I’ll punch Lana Del Rey right in the face twice, like Ray Rice in broad daylight in the plain sight of the elevator surveillance/ ’Til her head is banging on the railing, then celebrate with the Ravens.”

Do not let him get away with this again, he did so many times in the past, he got some media scrutiny, but for the most part walked away unscathed and is still making music today.

this man is a fucking genius. And people love and appreciate it. The Marshall Mathers LP (you know, the album with Kim and Kill You and Bitch Please II?) was certified diamond. If you don’t like it, don’t buy it. His music is his art and nobody has any right to censor that.

The fact that people actually believe his lyrics like the ones quoted are serious is absurd. Of all the things you could use to describe his lyrics (in the instance above, for example, astounding and satirical and spectacular to those who can actually appreciate them), serious is not even close to one of them.

Furthermore, he has raised 3 wonderful daughters and has supported gay rights with people like Elton John (remember that Grammy performance?) and Anderson Cooper. So maybe before you go run at him with pitchforks, you should actually be informed about things instead of jumping to conclusions and trying to be all progressive-activist while just looking ignorant and like a complete fool in reality.

He’s literally written entire songs about how the shit he says isn’t to be taken seriously and that he just says them to get a rise out of people

“I think I was put here to annoy the world, and destroy your little four year old boy or girl”

“A lot of people ask me stupid fucking questions, a lot of people think that what I say on records or what I talk about on a record, that I actually do in real life or that I believe in it, or if I say that I wanna kill somebody that I’m actually gonna do it or that I believe in it.”

“This is a public service announcement brought to you in part by Slim Shady. The views and events expressed here are totally fucked and are not necessarily the views of anyone.”

and my personal favorite

“Slim Shady does not give a fuck what you think. If you don’t like it you can suck his fucking cock. Little did you know upon purchasing this album you have just kissed his ass.”

I knew this was going to start happening and as a feminist and Eminem fan, I’m glad it has. Yes, we should definitely discuss things that make us feel unsafe and appalled. I have  been listening to Eminem since I was 6 years old and all the while I knew he was being offensive, I couldn’t help but be impressed by his ability to string words together and lay them over a catchy tune. I do not support domestic violence, I do not support “gay bashing” or any other victimization of a specific group of people. However, I enjoy listening to Eminem. We definitely need to discuss that his lyrics should not be taken seriously, we should definitely discuss how young children should not be allowed to listen to Eminem and be influenced by his lyrics while they’re still too young to understand that it is satire. Yes, it is inappropriate, racist jokes are inappropriate, gay jokes are inappropriate. However, this is a form of entertainment and you are allowed to criticize it, and allowed to ignore it, you do not have to buy his album and you do have the right to protest his work. Whichever side you stand on, know that a song about violence does not mean the singer is actually violent. Know that you have a choice to behave a certain way, and all the listeners of this music have a choice to behave a certain way. We shouldn’t praise a man for talking about abusing women in his songs, but we should discuss with people why Eminem has been able to get away with this behavior. He clearly states in multiple songs that he is not serious. If a person listens to these songs and acts out what they are hearing, they have a problem. People who act out movies or video games or books have a problem, not the creators of the entertainment. You do not have to like Eminem or his lyrics, but you do not have the right to take his art away from people who do enjoy it.

^ Fuckin yessssss could not have said it better myself

Last thing, the message is there. As someone who is a FULL ON STAN of Eminem and someone who enjoy’s Lana’s work, I can tell you this brings up A LOT of topics to talk about and discuss. The verse it self does, it might not have even been Marshall’s intention but look at it this way: This verse brings up hypocrisy in multiple ways. He notes mostly on the surface his own hypocrisies because of him being the father and legal guardian of 3 GIRLS, and then constantly bringing up women bashing in his songs. Secondly it brings up the hypocrisy of the NFL. Again the bars “ ’Til her head is banging on the railing, then celebrate with the Ravens.” The NFL has handled this Ray Rice situation so poorly and it brings up of course the shy culture there seems to be surrounding the issues of domestic abuse in popular media. IT MAKES PEOPLE TALK ABOUT IT RATHER THAN JUST FORGET IT, THIS CAN LEAD TO UNDERSTANDING AND RESOLUTION OF A SOCIAL ILL, THROUG DEBATE. THIRDLY, and probably the most overlooked. Lana’s own persona and lyrics. (NOTE: i’m not bashing her at all, I’m actually a “fan”, if you can call it that). The lyrics of Ultraviolence, her song, say “He hit me and it felt like a kiss” and “I’m your jazz singer, and you’re my cult leader”. Why weren’t people outraged at those lines? They speak of the ACCEPTANCE of domestic abuse, so why weren’t people up-in-arms about it? Anyway you can think the rest out for yourselfs, you don’t need some teenager on the internet telling you how to interpret art.  It’s a free world. “Fuck the Freeworld”
